COLLECTIONS AND STUDIES ABOUT PHILIP COINAGE

Study of Philip gold coins

Wonderful study from my friend Otakar Fojt who prepared an exhaustive corpus of Philip gold coins (aurei, quinarii and medallions) based on largest public collections and public auctions. This study has not been published and is proposed to you for personal, non-profit and research purposes only.

The imperial mints of Philip the Arab

Very interesting study by Jyrki Muona (University of Helsinki) about the imperial mints that struck antoninianii for Philip the Arab. The style of letters and busts are analysed in order to be able to attribute an antoninianus to a certain mint according to its style. This study also deals with the very rare antoninianii minted in Viminacium after the fall of the usurper Pacatian.

Doug Smith

Article from Doug Smith who quickly presents the Rome and Antioch mint issues for Philip.

Interpretation of the SAECVLARES AVGG issues

Interesting article from Eric Lesueur - hosted by Frederic Weber, see hereafter - who proposes a new interpretation of the SAECVLARES AVGG reverses issued in 248AD for the Millenium of Rome. Only available in French

Jim Shaffer

Jim Shaffer's website presents a very high number of antoninianii from all imperial mints, as well as some fouree coins or bronze counterfeits. One will notice sone interesting hybrids as well as some some very rare specimens such as the Otacilia Severa "PIETAS AVG N" with long obverse legend.

Warren Esty

Small presentation of some fouree antoninianii with comparison to the original coin, by Warren Esty. This site permits to discover the diversity and style of the ancient counterfeits.

OTHER EMPERORS

Antioch issues of Gordian III

Michael Mihalka's collection of coins of Gordian III. The link points to the page about Antioch issues, which presents some very rare types. The mint of Rome is also very well represented.

the DIVI series

Very complete study from Joaquim Blay about the "DIVI" series. On the basis of die-links study and statistical calculations, these issues have been attributed with certainty to the reigns of Decius and Trebonianus Gallus. Really very interesting!

Four bad years

Presentation of the coinage of Trebonianus Gallus, Hostilian as Augustus and Volusian on Richard Beale's website. Pages about Antioch issues are particulary interesting, like for exemple an antoninianus of Volusian using the reverse P M TR P VI COS P P / Felicitas standing left from Philip coinage.
